We tend to think of primitive as antiquated, old and outdated. Actually, it means first, or earliest of a kind. The site is named after the earliest dated H. sapiens fossil (found in Africa and named H. sapiens idaltu). So, primitive may mean oldest but does not include in its definition a status of lower value. This fossil is primitive and the oldest in the species found to date, but it is also the most modern and derived in the evolution of the genus Homo.
